How To Style Your Bed Like A Pro

Around six months ago, I was given the book titled “Make Your Bed.” It’s a super quick read – I’m talking an afternoon at the pool type of quick read. I highly recommend it. And no, it is not a book about how to make your bed; that’s what this blog is for! Not to ruin it, but the book is filled with little tasks you can do that will make a difference in your everyday life. But the main takeaway, spoiler alert, is to make my bed every day.

Yes, I used to “make” my bed, and by that, I mean pulling the covers to the top and haphazardly throwing on a few pillows, leaving the pretty pillows and throw blanket on the floor. Now I make my bed every day, complete with pretty pillows. But if we are making our bed every day, wouldn’t it be even better if our bed looked like it popped right off a magazine page into our bedroom? I’m sharing layer-by-layer how to style your bed like a pro, along the way, sharing my favorite sheets, blankets, and more!

Learning the Layers

First things first, once you start making your bed every day, you will become highly efficient and have it down to a science. So, don’t get overwhelmed with all the different layers. I am breaking down, making the bed into five categories: sheets, quilts, comforters, pillows, and toppers. The result will leave you with a professionally made bed, complete with all the layers and a few finishing touches. Let’s get to it.

Base Layer – Sheets

Let’s start at the bottom and work our way up. Sheets are the most critical part of making the bed. Itchy, loose, or even crunchy sheets are sure to keep a good night’s sleep at bay. The appearance of crisp, clean sheets is what my dreams are made of. However, with pure white sheets, there is one drawback: the need to replace them more frequently to maintain that crispness. As a result, I have found a sheet set on Amazon that is perfect for me. I am not sacrificing quality for the price. I especially love that they have deep pockets, which means the sheets stay in place during the night.

Now that you have your sheets, the next step is putting them on. I am a firm believer in the hospital corner tuck of the flat sheet. A quick Google search will provide the information you need. Not only does it give your flat sheet a firm fit, but it also provides a uniform appearance. We only sleep with the fitted sheet; I’m not a big fan of sheets—there I said it. I do the same tuck for my quilt too, but more on that later.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget when ordering your sheets to measure the depth of your mattress. Most mattresses today are pillowtop and require deep or even extra deep cut sheets.

Chic Quilts

Remember when the thought of adding a quilt to your bed brought back memories of our grandmother’s bed? Well, Grandma was right! Adding a quilt to your bedding adds instant texture and depth. Depending on the season determines the thickness of the quilt I use, but I always go for a soft, plush one. I also like to use comforters or blankets at times. When I do this, I still opt for the quilted look, but I love the feel of decorative comforters and cozy blankets… that’s what we curl up with!

Timeless Quilts + Comforters

Comforters & Duvets

Now comes the good ole debate, which is better to top your bed a comforter or duvet, is entirely up to you. I opt for a down insert with a duvet cover for our master bedroom, but for Maddox, I stick to a comforter. When I select a topper, I always go for texture and thickness. We don’t sleep with the top layer often. This layer is primarily for aesthetic purposes and for added coziness when watching TV in bed. If you’re looking for a cooler, consider a lightweight down comforter. When purchasing your comforter, think of jumping into bed and sinking into it – that’s what I’m going for!

Once you place your comforter on the bed, simply tri-fold it towards the bottom of the bed, opening up a space for your pillows.

A tray brings instant charm to any bed. I keep the tray neutrally styled year-round, adding new seasonal decor for holidays and as needed. Customizing the tray for your guests is a perfect surprise. Filling with items I know they love. For instance, for my girlfriend who loves reading, I will add a good book/magazine and a soothing candle. I promise your guests will rave about it!

Throw Blankets

Lastly, finish your bed with a draped throw blanket. Not only does it add that extra depth, but it also serves the purpose of adding extra warmth if your guests get chilly. It’s natural to be drawn to neutral colors when selecting your throw blankets, but if you want to add a pop of color, such as the 2020 color of the year, to your bedroom, a beautiful, bright throw blanket is a great way to go. To achieve this look, drape a bright or moody-colored duvet or blanket at the end of the bed, and complete the look by adding coordinating pillows.
