Holiday Storage

The holidays are over, and it’s time to take all those gorgeous, festive decorations down. But do you ever wonder how to store them? Do you throw them in a box and call it a day, or neatly pack and organize? I love seeing different ways to store holiday decor and how people keep them separated.

Most people use their attics, basements, and/or garages, but if you have a spare closet, try using that instead. I have a closet under the staircase where I store all my holiday decor. It’s convenient, easy access, and I don’t have to climb in and out of the attic trying to carry all kinds of heavy storage boxes (because let’s be real, who wants to go through all that hustle?!). You don’t realize it until you’re trying to lift and move boxes that all that decor adds up to some heavy weight. This way, I can fill the closet to the top with stacked bins and roll them out as needed.

I use color-coded bins with lids and wheels for each holiday to keep me a bit more organized and for easy access. For example, Green and red totes/bins are for Christmas, and blue bins are for fall decor. It helps keep everything together and, not to mention, makes it easy to grab. That way, I’m not having to pull out each bin and go through to see what is what.

I also take a piece of paper or an index card and write the contents of each bin on the outside. This really helps narrow down the bin I’m looking for. Label, Label, Label. They don’t sell the exact same bins that I have, but here are similar ones with the wheels. You can also use regular bins like these without wheels for stacking.

For garlands and wreaths, I have found it easier to hang them rather than box them.I use nails and coat hangers (hung on a coat rack) to hang them up.  There is a rod underneath it; however, I use it to hang garland, wreaths, and other miscellaneous items to keep them from getting squished in boxes. This means no fluffing each year. #winning. Seriously, so easy! And to be honest, the wreaths barely fit in a tote, which in turn takes up so much space.

There is a shelf at the top of the closet that can serve as extra storage for items like vases and large, fragile decorative pieces.

For ornaments, I categorize them… Breakable and Shatterproof. The breakables are thoroughly wrapped in newspaper to prevent breakage, and then I use stockings and other soft decorative materials to provide additional cushioning. The shatterproof ornaments are put in a bin together.

I have a few pencil trees (if you saw any of my Instagram posts this Christmas), so instead of packaging them individually, I just slide them to the back of the closet to avoid them getting messed up by bags and bins —and another win: no fluffing next year!

For my big tree, I take it down and put it in this Christmas Tree Storage Bag. It has wheels for easy carrying and stands up or lies down for storage. I highly recommend that everyone have a storage bag instead of putting their tree(s) back into their original boxes.

In the end, my closet is tightly packed, but it’s so convenient and easily accessible whenever needed. Tell me… how do you store your holiday decorations? I love seeing new ideas and getting inspired by others. Share them with me.
